The spectator thinks that his gaze travels freely across the image, he thinks that as he looks at the image his eyes can choose where to move away from, where to rest. However, it is a fact that the spectator does not travel across the simulated landscape as he would do across a real one. The representation itself leads the spectator. He does not move freely. The image is a trap that catches the eye, confining the gaze to the small cage of imposed meaning.
El espectador cree que su mirada vaga libremente por la imagen, cree que mientras mira sus ojos escogen por donde volar, en donde posarse. Pero sin duda el espectador no viaja por el paisaje representado como lo haría por el real. La representación tiene conductor, el espectador no va adonde quiere. La imagen es una trampa que captura la mirada, encerrándola finalmente en su pequeña jaula de significados impuestos.
