The Breathing Lake
El lago que respira

Four large paintings depict the famous semi-submerged bell tower of the Sau reservoir (an environmental icon of Catalonia) from the four cardinal points.
A 3D elevation of the same area is projected onto each painting, using video mapping, and the superimposition of light subtly alters the appearance of the painted surface.
Using real-time data from a weather website calibrated to the reservoir's coordinates, the painted image reflects the time of day and imperceptibly alters its atmosphere, so that if it rains in Sau, it rains in the painting. Likewise, thanks to another connection with the website of the Hydrographic Confederation that indicates the water level, the installation becomes a rain gauge: throughout the days the tower is submerged or uncovered to mark the water reserves of Barcelona.
And finally, regaining its functon as a clock, the tower chimes in a ghostly way the hours.
The installation also offers the possibility of viewing an accelerated mode of atmospheric changes, where the animation of the passing of days and the changing water level creates an impression of the landscape itself pulsating or breathing. This temporary, vibrant landscape highlights the metaphysical desolation of the religious ruin.
These paintings extend the visual territory of the bell tower my grandfather painted in Tavèrnoles—the origin of this series of works—to just 5 km away, where the Sau reservoir is located. Its submerged bell tower is a sibling to the original, which remained intact; both are in the same Romanesque style and were built in the 11th century.
Cuatro grandes pinturas muestran el famoso campanario semisumergido del pantano de Sau (icono medioambiental de Catalunya) desde los cuatro puntos cardinales.
En cada una de las pinturas se proyecta, a modo de videomapping, un alzado 3D del mismo territorio, cuya superposición lumínica altera sutilmente la apariencia del substrato pictórico.
Utilizando datos servidos a tiempo real por una web meteorológica ajustada a las coordenadas del pantano, la imagen pintada reproduce la hora del día y va alterando de forma imperceptible su atmósfera, de manera que si llueve en Sau, llueve en el cuadro. Asimismo, gracias a otra conexión con la web de la Confederación Hidrográfica que indica el nivel del agua, la instalación se convierte en un pluviómetro: a lo largo de los días, la torre va emergiendo o sumergiéndose, marcando así las reservas de agua de Barcelona.
Y finalmente, recuperando su función de reloj, la torre emite de manera fantasmal las campanadas horarias.
La instalación ofrece también la posibilidad de contemplar a voluntad un modo acelerado de los cambios atmosféricos posibles, en dónde la animación del paso de los días y el cambio de nivel del agua produce una impresión de latido o respiración del propio paisaje. Esta vitalidad paisagística temporal realza el abandono metafísico de la ruina religiosa.
Estas pinturas extienden el territorio visual del campanario que pintó mi abuelo en Tavèrnoles -orígen de esta serie de trabajos- a solo 5km de distancia, en donde se encuentra el pantano de Sau. Su campanario sumergido es hermano del primero, que quedó intacto; ambos de idéntico estilo románico y construídos en el mismo siglo XI.

This work is part of a series of five pieces grouped under the title "The Cosmic Bell and the Breathing Lake", which take as their starting point an inherited painting to recreate a particular domestic spiritual historiography using fictional metanarrative imagery. These are The Bell Tower, The Breathing Lake, The Tallest Flower, The Coughing House, and The Universes. All of them were shown from September 18, 2025, to November 22, 2025, in an exhibition held at the RocíoSantaCruz Gallery in Barcelona, during Barcelona Gallery Weekend 2025.
Este trabajo forma parte de una serie de cinco piezas agrupadas bajo el título de "La campana cósmica y el lago que respira" que toman como punto de partida un cuadro heredado para recrear una particular historiografía doméstica espiritual utilizando imaginarios metanarrativos ficcionales. Se trata de El Campanario, El lago que respira, La flor más alta, La casa que tose y Los universos. Todas ellas se mostraron del 18.09.2025 al 22.11.2025 en una exposición realizada en la Galería RocíoSantaCruz de Barcelona, durante el Barcelona Gallery Weekend 2025
