The Bell Tower
El campanario

This work is the origin of, and is part of, a series of five pieces grouped under the title "The Cosmic Bell and the Breathing Lake," which review a particular inherited domestic spiritual historiography using fictional metanarrative imagery. These are The Bell Tower, The Breathing Lake, The Tallest Flower, The Coughing House, and The Universes. All of them were shown from September 18, 2025, to November 22, 2025, in an exhibition held at the Rocío Santa Cruz Gallery in Barcelona, during Barcelona Gallery Weekend 2025.

Almost a century ago, my namesake grandfather, Dionís Escorsa, painted a watercolor in front of the small Romanesque church in Tavèrnoles—a village near Vic—that I've always seen hanging in the dining room of my parents' house, and which has inevitably shaped my aesthetic identity.

With the intention of discovering unusual kinships between romantic-bourgeois fin-de-siècle aesthetics and their current techno-gamer equivalents, I recently asked my parents if I could take the painting so I could digitally update it and turn the bell tower back into a clock.

By projecting 3D video mapping onto the original watercolor, Albert Merino and I managed to alter its atmosphere in real time, using data provided by a weather website adjusted to the coordinates of the town where my grandfather painted it.

The small projector placed in front of the painting only superimposes the minimum light necessary on the pictorial substrate to subtly change its appearance, without losing either the static character or the quality of the painting's material strokes.

Through a series of plugins of various climatic environments controlled by a blueprint architecture, the image reproduces the time of day and varies imperceptibly; the sun rises, passes, and sets over the watercolor at just the right moment, projecting corresponding shadows onto the village's architecture. If it rains in Tavèrnoles, it rains in the painting. There are lightning plugins for storms, fog, snow, or even a rainbow. At night, the church's artificial lighting is turned on, and the moon passes at the appropriate phase.

Finally, we have also managed to make the painted church bells ring, striking the hour. With distance, their sound has acquired a certain ghostly tone.

Este trabajo es el origen y forma parte de una serie de cinco piezas agrupadas bajo el título de "La campana cósmica y el lago que respira" que revisan una particular historiografía doméstica espiritual heredada utilizando imaginarios metanarrativos ficcionales. Se trata de El Campanario, El lago que respira, La flor más alta, La casa que tose y Los universos. Todas ellas se mostraron del 18.09.2025 al 22.11.2025 en una exposición realizada en la Galería RocíoSantaCruz de Barcelona, durante el Barcelona Gallery Weekend 2025

Ya hace casi un siglo, mi abuelo homónimo Dionís Escorsa pintó una acuarela delante de la pequeña iglesia románica de Tavèrnoles -un pueblo cercano a Vic- que toda la vida he visto colgada al comedor de casa de mis padres y que ha condicionado forzosamente mi identidad estética.

Con intención de descubrir relaciones inusuales de parentesco entre tales estéticas romántico-burgesas finiseculares y sus actuales equivalentes tecno-gamers, hace poco pregunté a mis padres si podía llevarme el cuadro para actualizarlo digitalmente y volver a convertir el campanario en un reloj.

Proyectando un videomapping 3D sobre la acuarela original, Albert Merino y yo hemos conseguido alterar su atmósfera a tiempo real, utilizando los datos servidos por una web meteorológica ajustada a las coordenadas del pueblo en el que mi abuelo la pintó.

El pequeño proyector confrontado al cuadro sólo superpone al substrato pictórico la mínima luz necesaria para cambiar su apariencia sutilmente, sin perder ni el carácter estático ni la calidad del trazo matérico de la pintura.

Mediante una serie de pluggins de diversos ambientes climáticos controlados por una arquitectura de blueprints, la imagen reproduce la hora del día y va variando de forma imperceptible; el sol sale, transcurre y se pone sobre la acuarela en el momento justo, proyectando sobre la arquitectura del pueblo las sombras correspondientes. Si llueve en Tavérnoles, llueve en el cuadro. Hay pluggins de rayos para tormentas, niebla, nieve o incluso puede llegar a salir el arco iris. De noche se enciende el alumbrado artificial de la iglesia y la luna pasa con la fase adecuada.

Finalmente, hemos logrado también que suenen las campanas de la iglesia pintada, dando las horas. Con la distancia, su sonido ha adquirido un cierto tono fantasmagórico.
